British Values

The Government set out their definition of British Values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy. The Department for Education have reinforced the need;

'To create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs'.

At Five Lanes we value the diversity of backgrounds of all pupils, families and wider school community.

The Department for Education defines British Values as follows:

  • Respect for democracy and support or participation in the democratic process.
  • Respect for the basis on which the law is made and applies in England.
  • Support for equality of opportunity for all.
  • Support and respect for the liberties of all within the law.
  • Respect for and tolerance of different faiths and religious and other beliefs.

So how do we promote fundamental British Values at our School?

At the heart of what we do is to be actively inclusive.  We are proud that children from all backgrounds, faiths and cultures attend our school.  Whilst we follow a broadly Anglican tradition in our statutory Collective Worship, we celebrate other faiths and festivals from around the world.

We also believe that Fundamental British Values can be taught through a good Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship (PSHE&C) curriculum and through good Religious Education (RE). To do this we use KAPOW (PSHE & Religion and Worldviews) materials  These materials also help us develop children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding.

Our broader curriculum also excites and engages children so that they are prepared for the next stage in their education and beyond into the world of work so that they take their place in positively contributing to society.  Additionally, we give our children a secure understanding of the past and how that has influenced the British Values that are held dear in our society
