Foundation Subjects
At Five Lanes Primary, our foundation curriculum plays an important role in delivering our vision of firm foundations for learning and flourishing. Through a broad and balanced range of subjects, children develop curiosity, creativity and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Our curriculum reflects our core values of trust, respect and compassion. We encourage pupils to explore ideas, work collaboratively and develop an appreciation of different perspectives while building knowledge and skills across a wide range of subjects.
Foundation subjects include art and design, design and technology, geography, history, music, computing, PSHE and physical education. These subjects provide valuable opportunities for pupils to develop creativity, critical thinking and practical skills alongside their academic learning.
Kapow Curriculum
To support the teaching of many of our foundation subjects, we use resources from Kapow Primary. Kapow provides carefully sequenced units that support teachers in delivering engaging and high-quality lessons while ensuring clear progression in knowledge and skills.
The programme supports our teaching in subjects including art and design, design and technology, computing, music, history, geography and PSHE.
Two-Year Rolling Curriculum and Mixed-Age Classes
As a small school, many of our classes are taught in mixed-age groups. To ensure that all pupils receive a broad and balanced curriculum, we organise our foundation subjects through a carefully planned two-year rolling curriculum.
This approach allows pupils in mixed-age classes to learn together while ensuring that, across the two-year cycle, all required content is taught and revisited. Knowledge and skills are carefully sequenced so that pupils build understanding over time and deepen their learning as they move through the school.
Our curriculum map outlines the topics and areas of learning taught across this two-year cycle.
Regular Curriculum Review
We regularly review and evaluate our curriculum to ensure it continues to meet the needs of our pupils. As a small school, this ongoing reflection allows us to adapt our curriculum where necessary and ensure there are no gaps in learning.
Through careful planning and evaluation, we ensure that every child experiences a rich, engaging and coherent curriculum.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
We are fortunate to have excellent school grounds, which provide valuable opportunities to enrich our curriculum. Outdoor learning, exploration and practical experiences allow pupils to develop curiosity and connect their learning with the world around them.
Through our foundation subjects, we aim to inspire pupils to ask questions, explore new ideas and develop a lifelong love of learning, supporting every child in building the firm foundations for learning and flourishing.
