Writing
At Five Lanes Primary, we believe that strong literacy skills provide the foundations for success across the whole curriculum. From the moment children begin school, we focus on developing confident readers and writers through a carefully planned approach to phonics, reading and writing. Early reading is supported through systematic phonics teaching, which enables children to decode words and develop fluency. As pupils progress through the school, they deepen their understanding of texts and learn to communicate their ideas clearly through writing.
Writing
At Five Lanes Primary, we aim to develop confident, capable and creative writers. Writing allows children to communicate their ideas clearly, express themselves and apply their learning across the wider curriculum.
Our approach to writing is informed by the Department for Education’s Strong Foundations guidance and the Writing Framework, which emphasise the importance of developing secure early language, transcription and composition skills. From the earliest stages of learning, we ensure that children build strong foundations in speaking, reading and writing so that they can become confident and independent writers.
Our approach to writing
Writing is taught through carefully planned units that are often linked to high-quality texts. These units allow children to explore vocabulary, understand the features of different text types and practise key writing skills before writing independently.
Throughout the writing process, children are supported to:
-
explore and discuss high-quality texts
-
develop vocabulary and sentence structures
-
plan, draft and edit their writing
-
write for a range of purposes and audiences
Teachers model writing and guide pupils through each stage of the writing process so that children develop confidence, accuracy and independence.
Spelling
Spelling builds on the phonics knowledge children develop in early reading. At Five Lanes Primary we teach spelling through a focus on sounds and syllables, helping pupils understand how words are structured and how spelling patterns work.
This approach supports children in breaking words into manageable parts and applying their knowledge when spelling unfamiliar words.
Handwriting
We teach handwriting using Letter-join, which supports children in developing correct letter formation, joins and a fluent handwriting style.
Children begin by learning accurate letter formation and gradually develop a joined, legible handwriting style as they move through the school. We encourage pupils to take pride in the presentation of their work.
Writing across the curriculum
Writing is an important part of learning across the curriculum. Pupils are given opportunities to apply their writing skills in subjects such as history, geography and science, enabling them to communicate ideas, explain their thinking and deepen their understanding.
Developing confident writers
At Five Lanes Primary, we want every child to develop the confidence and skills to express their ideas clearly through writing. By building strong foundations in language, spelling and handwriting, we support pupils to become thoughtful and capable writers who are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
